Before you decide how to divide up your space, take a look at your floor plan. Older homes have much more restrictive floor plans with kitchens, living rooms and dining rooms located in very designated spaces. Modern floor plans tend to have a more open concept, which offers more flexibility to owners. But it’s important to still use your furniture and other living room decor to help give each space its own purpose. Breaking up your space will help you get the most out of it without making any one area feel too cluttered.

We are half way through the year and it’ s a perfect time to reflect, ask yourself if you feel you are on track.

If a goal you set was to take charge of your home and let go of the things you don’t want or use any longer but maybe you haven’t started or have started but progress has paused…you are not alone! If You Want To Get Organized, Every Item Must Have A Home

**In order to maintain organization, every item must have a home.** You can’t put something away if it doesn’t have a designated spot. If you do, the item will most likely be stashed in a drawer or closet to never be found. Having a home for an item means that there is only one logical place for you to look for it. For example, there should only be one drawer where you would find your socks, and only one place where your child will find favorite puzzles or stuffed animals and one place you keep your tax records. Those items that are just laying around adding to the clutter are likely those for which you've never declared a home.

Here's your home work for January:

Block out designated days and the specific time (could be 30 minutes or 3 hours). What will you focus on tackling each week? Keep in mind that this time should be free and clear of distraction so you can stay focused and and maximize your efforts. For our household, Sunday mornings and Tuesdays evenings are the least chaotic so decluttering happens then.

Practice using the following steps with your approach to designating home locations for all the items in the room you're working in.

Put like items together
Look for related items and group them together
Dispose of unneeded, duplicate or broken items
Choose containers for each group of items.
Decide the home for each container

How To Choose Effective Storage Containers That You’ll Actually Use

It is important to purchase storage containers after you have categorized items and determined their home location. Buying the wrong size or type of storage equipment will just add to your clutter. Go for the simplest, least effort system so you'll save stress and unnecessary spending down the road. Remember to store items close to where they will be used. Tasks are much easier when everything you need is close at hand. Think about the activities you do in each room, or each area of each room, and gather the tools for each activity together in that area. It is crucial to store frequently used items in the most convenient storage area. To aid with finding and retrieving the item, subdivide the space. Large, undivided spaces are inefficient storage, and they make it difficult to keep items organized. By dividing the space, you can group and organize items so you can more quickly and easily locate the item you want. Lastly, label the container and include what is inside.

This time of year can be very hectic, but it does not have to be if you take some time to plan and reflect.

Right now, not next week or next month but today, is a perfect time to get a head start on your New Year’s goals. Incorporating just a couple of extra steps to what you already do can help simplify and eliminate extra steps and stress. Our goals and steps to accomplish them may be different, but the focus on improvement can be the same. Try this when you’re unpacking your Christmas ornaments, anything you run across that doesn’t get put out on display…get rid of it. For example, if you pull a shirt out of your closet that is stained, maybe a smidge too tight, or simply doesn’t bring you happiness…get rid of it! Have a donation box and every time you run across something you don’t want, toss it in. When the box is full drop it off at your local donation center the next time you are running errands.

Here are a few ideas which might work for your pantry & baking supplies. While you’re doing holiday baking, look in your pantry and get rid of anything that’s expired, spilled or empty. If you have an appliance that you hardly use but still need, think about storing it elsewhere to clear space in your kitchen. Take a few minutes to organize your spices while the cookies are baking.

These are just a few examples but the main take away is the benefits of decluttering and organizing out weighs keeping things which take up space, both emotionally and physically. Remember to be patient with yourself while you are retraining and moving away from old habits.

CLEAN OUT YOUR REFRIGERATOR MONTH

Are you tired of sending your spouse or teenager on a frantic run to the store to pick up something that you swore you had "somewhere" in your fridge? Check out the tips below to learn a couple helpful tips for keeping your fridge a bit more organized and your life a little less chaotic.

Start with thinking about placing your items in practical spots. Some basic rules are the top shelf and door tend to be the warmest "zones", while the middle and bottom shelves get progressively cooler. Therefore you should keep condiments in the door. Then store your dairy products, eggs and spreads on the upper shelves. Finally your meats and milk can go on the lowest shelf and put your fruits and vegetables in the crisper. By putting everything in its proper place, you can help your food last a little longer and avoid spending more at the grocery store.

When it comes to store bought products, ditch the original boxes and use clear bins to store your food. It helps your fridge look more uniform and ensures that you can see exactly what's available.

Lastly, label the bins. Once you have your clear storage bins where you like them, it's time to label them with pre-written stickers. This will help your loved ones find what they're looking for and ensure that everything returns to its proper place in the refrigerator.
